Welcome to the home of the Beare-Tertis Viola.

These small violas were developed by Don Henneman of Beare & Son so that younger players have the opportunity to learn viola on proper instruments and not have to use violins strung as violas - something that, (unfortunately for the pupil), still happens in too many schools.

They have been designed so the back lengths correspond to violin sizes.

The smallest 1/8 size viola has the same back length as a 1/2 size violin,

the 1/4 size viola is the same length as a 3/4 violin and the 1/2 size viola equates to a full size violin.

In order to produce a real viola sound the Beare-Tertis pattern is wider across the centre and considerably wider at the bottom bout. Together with a greater body depth the overall internal volume is around 15% larger than a standard pattern instrument. For ease of playing the upper bouts are no wider than the equivalent violin size. This enables smaller hands to reach higher positions than would otherwise be possible.

For older players we have a 14 3/4" back length Beare-Tertis viola - the 3/4 size.

These instruments have been selling fast so the current stocks are getting low.

Prices start at £179 for the Student model, which includes a lightweight rectangular case and brazilwood bow.
